DescriptionThe homeland of the Cahuilla people is the Southern California desert. They are known for finely coiled baskets with intricate designs. Typically, most Cahuilla baskets use juncus, a grass which naturally ranges from yellow to warm orange and provides a pleasing variation of color.

This early 20th century boat-shaped is basket made from sumac and natural and dyed juncus on a grass foundation. Note apparent double coiling that starts at the shoulder. A dark band encircles the border with a double pointed band below. Additional designs inside.
