DescriptionPima baskets were primarily used for various aspects of food preparation and consumption. The Pima are well-known for never using dyes in their weavings. Instead, the darker sections seen in many of their baskets are made with devil’s claw. The color of these patches in this basket indicates that it is a Pima as opposed to a Papago, due to variations in cultivation between the two groups. As was traditional for many Pima baskets, the vessel was begun at its center with a black devil’s claw vortex motif from which unique designs stretch outwards. The geometric shapes wrapping around the walls of the basket in concentric rows are a characteristic Pima motif. On View
