DescriptionInside the bowl numerous Japanese Buddhist figures with gold “halos” and shaven heads surround a central figure with long black hair and thin beard. Single female figure to top proper right above central figure. Dragon with white and black body and red underbelly weaves throughout the group, with its white head presented at the feet of the central figure. Japanese style structure in the background with encircled gold cross, probably the Shimazu Daimyo’s crest. Rolling hills and gold skyline in far background, brown and black foreground.Outside of bowl features similar scene with the Buddhist figures painted around the bowl. The central figure from inside is also featured at the center of the outside, with female figure to his proper right. Same dragon is present on outside as well. White band wraps around the bowl in the background followed by stylized hills and golden skyline. Brown foreground.
