DescriptionThis 1954 oil painting was made by artist Frederick Hammersley, one of the few Los Angeles artists who adopted non-objective subject matter immediately following World War II. This early 1950s example fits most clearly into the locally-developed "hard edge" style that was showcased in the exhibit, "Four Abstract Classicists" in the late 1950s. The four artists were not a "group" but were held together by their similar styles: forms are flat, solid in color, and sharp-edged.On View
