DescriptionColman moved to Southern California in 1913, and by 1920 had settled in Laguna Beach, where he bought ocean front property and built a home. Plein air artists like Colman spent much time in solitude in the Western landscape, creating paintings of the vast spaces and enormous distances of its arid deserts, majestic mountains, deep canyons, and rocky coastline. They fused self and nature in their art, working year-round on canvases outdoors or recreating nature in the studio based on their studies. On View
