DescriptionThis large and fine basket is woven in the typical Yurok-Karok-Hupa techniques: plain 2 element S- twining with plain 3 element S - twining at the basket start and three inches out from the center. There are 3 elements at the edge of the bottom portion for one row and the rim for two rows. The interesting stepped geometric decoration in overlay, which shows only on the outside of the basket, is a varation of a design entitled "waxpoo." Its meaning is uncertain but there appears to be a reference to "the middle." There is a wrapped rod at the rim for reinforcement. An eleven pointed star design was woven in the bottom of the basket from the start.
