DescriptionCharles Arthur Fries was an artist of great talent who came west in the 1890s, stayed briefly at San Juan Capistrano mission, and then settled permanently in San Diego where he became known as a landscapist. His coloration of muted greens, beiges and browns and his subject matter of San Diego's back country hills remained consistent throughout his many years of production. What makes this work so wonderful and surprising is that it seems to have been a spontaneous reaction to the sights that caught Fries eye rather than having been produced for sale. Almost abstract in its minimal subject matter and disinterest in three-dimensional space, it is expressionist in its bold brushwork and inorganic colors. On View
