DescriptionOrpha Klinker was a leading woman painter of her time, carrying on the example set by Anna Hills (her painting teacher, briefly) of constant community engagement as well as activism on behalf of women painters. Orpha’s own legacy as an artist is pegged to her life in California. During her lifetime, she created an immense portfolio that documents Los Angeles history, mostly in the form of portraits—she painted countless city leaders and icons, everyone from the mayor to local legend Death Valley Scotty. She was also known for etchings and illustrations of landscapes and architecture, California landmarks and deserts. Through her subject matter, Klinker became recognized as somewhat of an expert on early California history. On View
