DescriptionRafael Coronel is a Mexican painter who was a member of Nueva Presencia, a group of artists who sought to encourage individual artistic expression and figurative representations of the psychological state and present condition of Mexico and its people, in contrast to illustrations of heroic figures portrayed by Mexican muralists. Coronel’s work is inspired by both native and European influences, as he often references the styles of Romantic painter Francisco Goya, Baroque artists Caravaggio and Diego Velazquez, Mexican painter Jose Clemente Orozco, and Mexican graphic artist Jose Guadalupe Posada. In addition to drawing on the works of both indigenous and European artists, Coronel typically delineates forms in chiaroscuro and features figures in profile, characteristics of Renaissance art.On View
