DescriptionFeast bowl from Siassi Island, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea, Melanesia; Dates to 19th - 20th century. This is a large oval-shaped dark brown bowl carved out of wood. The majority of this bowl is covered in opposing geometric incised designs and motifs shaped like a fish tail. The ends, or points, of this bowl have a relief of an anthropomorphic face with fish tail eyes and a long narrow nose. The handles along the sides are also symmetrical. They are triangular shaped with what resembles spread out arms with a hand at either end. Faded white pigments filled the majority of the designs but have probably faded overtime. On View
