DescriptionCanoe Bailer collected from the Massim area on Gawa Island in the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea. This object dates from the early to mid-20th Century. This bailer is used to remove water canoes take at sea. The incised designs and long handle represent the eyes and nose of a face. It is made out of dark brown wood and carved into an oval shaped bowl with its nose-like handle protruding out of the interior surface towards the center of the bowl. There is a rough incised pattern representing eyes at the end. The surface is rough.On View
