DescriptionThis Friendship Quilt from around 1930 was made by the Applemau Chapel, Sturgeon Aid Ladies Society, Pleasant Grove, Union, Missouri, west of St. Louis. it was common practice for women’s groups to get together to create what are now called friendship quilts for departing friends and family. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many found themselves constantly moving westward, and these quilts would have each block signed by different women wishing them well on their trek. The Tuckers moved to Santa Ana from Sturgeon, Missouri, and it was felt the quilt was done representing members of the congregation. Quilts of this type were often made as fund raising projects or as gift in the early part of this century. On View
