DescriptionThe soft landscapes of J. Francis Murphy were painted in the Tonalist style that favors colored atmospheres to portray emotion. Murphy was heavily influenced by the early American writers Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau who championed the inseparable relationship between man and nature. Mostly a self-taught artist, Murphy was acknowledged as one of America’s most important landscape artists during his lifetime. This painting was retouched by the artist in February of 1919.
