DescriptionThis object is a jade pendant featuring dragon and phoenix designs. The dragon is an ancient motif in Chinese art symbolizing the power of creation and the bringer of rain. Unlike the Western dragon, it was considered a portent of good fortune. The Chinese phoenix, or fenghuang, was named after the creature of Grecian mythology because both were symbols of rebirth and immortality. The combination of dragon and phoenix came to represent imperial power in later dynasties. This fine jade pendant has red coloring due to the penetration of iron oxide while the pendant was buried underground.
