DescriptionThe rancho and mission cultures had become fully developed themes in regional art by the 1890s, including images of community life in old California. Here Duvall depicts the Mission as fully integrated into the life of the Anglo community at Mission San Juan Capistrano. This is one of several mission subjects that Duvall painted near the end of the 19th century. The mission’s presence serves as an artistic supplement to the narrative of this piece rather than as a purely historical addition. During the late 1800s, depictions of the missions entered the “artistic mainstream.” Artists sought to capture a nostalgic tone in their work of the missions; Duvall did through portraying the mission in an Impressionist style. She above utilized light colors, broken brushwork, and natural light in the Impressionist tradition to express the mission in a more contemporary way.
