DescriptionThis scene of Mission San Juan Capistrano’s old pepper tree shows the site long after the end of the mission and rancho eras. The American painter Charles Percy Austin became enamored by Mission San Juan Capistrano, living there for a period and providing the illustrations for Capistrano Nights (1930), an important collection of stories cowritten by Father St. John O'Sullivan. The painting is one of three works by Charles Percy Austin to be donated to the museum in 1964 by Ralph J. Steven, who was married to Austin's sister, Martha.
