DescriptionThis patchwork quilt is an example of the "Roman Stripe" pattern. The embroidery stitches are on black strips and the border is feather stitch and double feather stitch done in varied shades of yellow and orange. The materials used in the making of quilt were cut from dresses worn by Madame Schunann-Heink during the course of her career as a concert artist and Metropolitan Opera Star.Three of the ribbons used in the quilt have writing or markings on them. One ribbon is marked "COMPLIMENTS OF MISS JOHN / MILLINERY / FANCY GOODS". The second ribbon is marked "HURON". The third ribbon is an American flag with an eagle to the left and a circle on the red and white stripes reading "Landing of Columbus." Marked on the right of the flag is "NATIONAL PUBLIC SCHOOL CELEBRATION / COLUMBUS DAY / OCTOBER 21ST / 1492 - 1892 / OFFICIAL BADGE / PATENT APPLIED FOR".The back of the quilt is gold colored silk.
