DescriptionThis painted ceramic jar was made by the Yangshao culture during the Neolithic Period (5000-3000 BCE) in China. This remarkable piece is unusual in its painting and shape. The bands of circles on the inside of the rim and around the neck are rare in Chinese Neolithic pottery. Rarer still is the jar’s especially globular shape which is emphasized by its horizontal lines and low-set lug handles. The vessel has a flared mouth, a small neck, and wide shoulders. Three sets of concentric circles decorate two thirds of the jar's body. There is also a zig-zag pattern on the neck. The bottom section of the jar was likely left blank because the vessel sat in a sunken pit in the ground, where decoration would not be appreciated.
