DescriptionBirds are of strong spiritual importance to the Iatmul people. A bird’s head, inset with cowrie shells for eyes, protrudes from one end while a flat, wide tail shapes the other and a crescent pattern, possibly representing feathers, wraps around the seat. The stool may have been stored alongside other ceremonial objects in the men’s house (haus tambaran).
