DescriptionThis hanging mortar was collected around the Schouten Islands in Papua New Guinea's East Sepik Province. Mortars - an object type common to the entire world due to their efficiency at pulverizing foods, pigments, and more - were a mainstay in Papua new Guinea. This large mortar was carved out of a large piece of heavy wood to give it a sturdy construction. It was hung upside down when not in use.
