DescriptionA brown wooden goblet-shaped mortar from the Bagabag Island in the Madang Province of Papua New Guinea and dates from the early to mid-20th century. The mortar features a carved face motif with protruding noses and mouths. The object is noted to have been excessively used due to the apparent discoloration wear on the inside. Mortars—an object type common to the entire world due to their efficiency at pulverizing foods, pigments, and more.
