DescriptionThis large mortar or bowl with pestle comes from the Schouten Islands of Papua New Guinea, and it dates to the 20th century. It was carved out of a large piece of heavy wood, has an unfinished interior, and the exterior is painted white with pigment. The carvings on this piece depict two birds or serpents coiling around the outside. The accompanying wooden pestle resembles a club, and its head features carved designs with fibrous hair and an attached cord.On View
