DescriptionThe textiles of the Miao in Southwest China are appreciated for their exuberant, decorative qualities. Organic designs such as the flowers seen on this vest are commonly employed motifs. Embroidery is widely practiced throughout Miao communities. It is likely to be a continually used technique due to the fact that it does not require the use of burdensome tools and as such can easily be done anywhere. While embroidery is achieved through the use of hand dyed silk threads, this vest was likely produced for the tourist market. As such, it is possibly made with synthetically dyed and mass produced threads. On View
