DescriptionJuan Rodriguez Cabrillo is known as the first European explorer to discover California and thus a sculpted representation of him was chosen for the museum’s Ada E. Bowers Fountain within the courtyard of the Bowers Museum. The fountain was built in conjunction with the museum in the mid-1930s. The creation of the fountain was made possible by a special trust created by Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Bowers. The trust specifically allowed for $25,000 to be set aside for a fountain to be built on the premises of the museum. Sculptor Ada May Sharpless was in charge of the fountain’s design.
