DescriptionIn many parts of Indonesia, nearly every surface found on the exterior of homes, granaries, and other structures are carved with decorative patterns and designs that communicate beliefs about nature and religion. This object is one from a pair of house posts that are carved with presumably male and female stylized faces. The tops are notched to hold a door lintel that would complete the portal.

This post is dark brown in color with stylized head at top and incised swirls throughout the front. White pigment is filled into the incised lines. The face has deep cuts for eyes, elongated triangular nose, and incised line for mouth. Diagonal lines across the cheeks and two points arches on the forehead. Below the head are eight sections incised with decorative elements consisting of opposing "S" form spirals and interlocked spirals. Object is also notched at the bottom and cutout along one side.
