DescriptionThe California poppy, a native flower that grows wild throughout the state, was designated the state flower in 1903. Gold is the overarching theme in California symbols, with the state colors being blue and gold, the state nickname the Golden State, and gold the official state mineral. Plein air landscape painters also featured the California poppy; some found they were so popular that they couldn’t paint them fast enough. The yellow variety of Eschscholzia Californica, perennial and somewhat prostrate, is found mainly along the coast.Albert Valentien captures the poppy in a vase in this still life.On View
