DescriptionThis object is a slit gong pounder (or drum pounder) with a crocodile head handle. It comes from Wogamus Village in the Sepik/April River region of Papua New Guinea. Drumming plays an important role in communication between villages in the Sepik River region. Drumming also takes place during special ceremonial events and celebrations. Carved in hard wood, drum pounders often would have an intricately designed ancestral figure on one end.
