DescriptionIt was the humanity, not the social standing, of his subjects that led William McCloskey to create many of the portraits in this series. Here a young woman with ruddy cheeks looks past the viewer, her sad blue eyes expressing a touching vulnerability. Wearing a Salvation Army bonnet and pin, she stands in front of a rocky outcropping, alluding to the organization’s practice of gathering donations from passersby on the street.
