DescriptionCarved and painted wood and raffia initiation mask from the Pende of Zaire, Africa. A rounded mask having a bulbous forehead, slit eyes with heavy lids, angular nose with pierced nostrils, protruding, open mouth, lug ears and beard. The pierced perimeter attached with a head-covering of woven raffia surmounted by four tall cones forming the coiffure. Painted with red, black and white pigment.On View
