DescriptionWestern Plains Lakota (Sioux) ceremonial drum. Drums were the primary Plains Indian musical instrument and hand drums such as this were used by individuals, often as they sang solo. The painted design depicts a central pole with a doll tied to the top and may be a reference to the annual Sun Dance of the Lakota. Object was collected by Henrietta Lunde Holte, mother of donor.On View
