DescriptionThis 1850 Portrait is one of two copies made from original now in possession of Mrs. Ana Begue de Packman. The copies are believed to have been made by the French artist Penelon, a well-known artist of this region during the early 50's. Don Bernardo Yorba, son of Antonio Yorba, a Catalonian soldier with the Portola expedition 1769, was the grantee of Santiago de Santa Ana Rancho, the only Spanish grant in what is now Orange County. Don Bernardo built the first two-story adobe house in what is now Orange County, on his Rancho Canon de Santa Ana, granted to him in 1834 by the government. The home contained 90 rooms and history records that over 1,000 mission-trained Indians were employed. He was one of the wealthiest and most distinguished men of his day.
