DescriptionThis feathered headdress comes from the Southern Highlands province or New Ireland province of Papua New Guinea and it dates to the 20th century. Men gathered during large drumming ceremonies called sing-sings will wear a huge ensemble of jewelry, necklaces, daggers, arm and waist bands, but the most important items that display their status and wealth are the hats made of plant fiber and bird of paradise feathers. The feathers of the bird of paradise are the most prized possession of a warrior in the Highlands of New Guinea, and are shown off with great pride and example of status. Each feather contains a great deal of wealth often costing several hundred dollars. On View
