DescriptionThe Yokuts are well known for their complex basketry forms and designs. Men and women are shown with linked hands in a portrayal that is most likely a dance. The diamond patterns surrounding the body are thought by many to represent rattlesnakes but may represent gopher snakes. The rim of the basket has black lines that are called “rim ticking.” This ticking is more commonly seen to the east of the Yokuts area and indicates the basketmaker may have come from the Death Valley area and married into the Yokuts tribe. Probably made by Yokut Indians.
