DescriptionCeramic vessel, light red brown finish, with coiled incised snake base. From Colima, Western Mexico Coastal area. The Colima culture (c. 100 BCE - 600 CE) produced some of the most varied and perfected ceramics in western Mexico. Colima artists were superior at freehand clay molding, using a technique of smoothing the clay with a stick or small stone to provide a natural glaze. This is a funerary piece associated with shaft tomb cultures. Saucer-shaped with a light brown finish, its base is in the shape of a double-headed coiled snake. The snake, with an incised diamond pattern, was formed separately.
