DescriptionThis object is one of a pair of warrior figures which commonly served as guardians in Chinese tombs. The armor depicted here is standard for the Tang dynasty. It consists of breast plates held in place by cords down the center, armored skirts parted in the center, and upper arm guards. Their bulging eyes and beards gave the figures a ferocious appearance intended to dissuade evil demons from entering their tomb.
