DescriptionThis is an oil on canvas painting of St. Vincent Ferrer, possibly painted by Nicolás Rodríguez Juárez between the 17th and 18th century in Mexico. Vincent Ferrer (1350- 1419), a Valencian Dominican friar and preacher, is depicted as a saint, evident by the wings on his back and halo above his head. He stands on a pulpit which is inscribed with “S. Vicente Ferrer” and other text. As he stands on the pulpit, he points upwards with one hand and holds a crucifix with the other. Before him sits a book, referenced as the sacred bible, and a bell, symbolic to his miracle working. From his mouth, a speech scroll is painted with the text “Timete Deum et date illi honorem,” a shortened version of the scriptural passage from the Book of Revelation that in its entirety states “Fear God and give glory to him, for the hour of his judgment has come.”On View
