DescriptionThis object is a 19th Century Miao wedding blanket made of silk and cotton. Just as silver adornments offer women a degree of independence, being the sole creators of textiles - everything from clothing to blankets - affords Miao women control over many aspects of courtship and married life. Among some Miao peoples, brides or their female relatives will make highly decorated bed coverings to win the approval of their groom’s family.
