DescriptionThis object is a silver pipe from the Lawa (or Lua) people of Northern Thailand or Laos. It was most likely used for smoking tobacco. The many cultures residing in the Golden Triangle region of Asia place a high importance on silver adornments and belongings, such as various types of jewelry, coins, tobacco boxes, or pipes. Objects such as these are portable and beautiful indicators of a family’s wealth and status that preserve their value over long periods of time. Women’s silver adornments function as a marriage dowry, and silver pieces are often passed down from generation to generation.
