DescriptionWooden hand drum probably from the Schouten Islands or the Huon Gulf Region, Papua New Guinea, Melanesia. The relatively minimal carving on this drum make it difficult to characterize, an issue further compounded by the lack of a drumhead—a more common find among Papuan handheld drums. Drums such as these are typically used in an array of public and private events including festivals and initiation rituals.
