DescriptionThis is a large and beautifully carved drum from the Gama River of Papua New Guinea. The Gama River lies between the Bamu and Turama Rivers of the Papuan Gulf. The drums from this area are some of the most elegant of New Guinea with distinct rough-hewn adze marks on the barrel of the drum and stylized open-fish mouth of the base. Cylindrical shaped wooden hand drum. The base consists of an incised decorative pattern with traces of white pigment. Opening at base comes to two pointed protrusions forming an arch. On the opposite end, a braided fiber band can be found around the rim.On View
