DescriptionTribal Chinese people have migrated to countries south of China. The Hmong are among those peoples whose culture originated in China, but who are currently residing outside of China. As with the Miao, Hmong textiles are created with great skill and care, and attention is given to details and adornments. The dye work seen in the vertical panels of this hat were created with a technique known as batik. Batik is a very commonly employed resist dye technique among the Miao. In order to achieve the technique, a layer of dye-resistant material is applied to a textile in order to preserve its white color. Materials such as wax resist the dye while the rest of the material absorbs it. The textile is then dyed, typically indigo, and the wax is removed by applying boiling water once the textile has dried. On View
