DescriptionThis fragment is the beginnings of a Hopi basket. Baskets were vital aspects of the life of Native Americans in terms of survival and artistic expression. Several different techniques were used and variations in style, form and design exist regionally. A great deal of knowledge and skill was required to complete a useable basket. This fragment appears to be made using the plaiting technique. It is possible that it was sold as a novelty item for tourists and was never intended as a basket. On View
