DescriptionThis story board was made by the Asmat people, who reside in the coastal region of Papua (Irian Jaya) Province in Indonesia. It dates to the 20th century. An annual carving contest held first in 1981 by Catholic missionaries is responsible for energizing Asmat carving. Today carvers continue to represent the symbolism and traditions of their culture in contemporary ways. This storyboard shows an early phase in the construction of a men's house.On View
