DescriptionLime container collected from the Massim area in the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea and dates back to the mid-20th century. Part of a chief's accoutrements, this large gourd was used to contain lime, a powered mineral chewed with betel nut. The body is made from a smooth brown coconut shell. The protruding neck at the top is wrapped with black fiber. There are four small discs sewn to the top of the neck. A curved pointed boar's tusk protrudes out of the neck. There are three holes on the tusk; the last one is whitish in color. A string of shell beads is attached to one of the holes.On View
