DescriptionThis kava bowl comes from Samoa and dates to the late 19th or early 20th century. In Samoan kava circle rituals, the ceremonial libation kava was served from bowls using coconut shell cups. Kava comes from liquid residue of the mashing and soaking of a kind of pepper root. It is mildly intoxicating. The consumption of kava was solely for high status individuals.
