DescriptionThe subject of this sepia-toned portrait is a Comanche Chief named Tosh-a-wa (Tosh-a way) also known as Silver Brooch. One of a series, the photo was taken by photographer and coumentarist William S. Soule at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 1858. In this photograph, Tosh-a-wa is wearing an army-style uniform with a Jeff Davis campaign style hat. There is a star, ribbon, tasseled cord, and feathers on the hat. His hair is wrapped in braids.
