DescriptionThis exquisitely carved ceremonial ladle or scoop was made in the Austral Islands and is believed to have been used to serve kava, a drink made from kava root. The bands of repeating diamond shapes give this ladle incredible texture and a band of stylized human faces encircle the handle. This elaborate and highly ornamental carving style is characteristic of artwork from the Austral Islands. On View
