DescriptionThis delicately carved bowl was used to hold water while a scholar wrote in calligraphy or painted in their studio. In China, the scholar's study was the essence of aristocratic culture. Only objects of great artistry would grace the writing desk. The bowl is carved as an open lotus pad with a cicada sitting on the rim.
