DescriptionThis photograph of Panamanian baseball Hall of Famer Rod Carew was taken by photographer Leigh A. Wiener in 1983 at Carew's home. During his major league career, Carew played for the Minnesota Twins and the California Angels between 1967 and 1985, and earned one of the highest batting averages of all time. He would later go on to coach the Angels and the Milwaukee Brewers.Wiener recalls the day the photo was taken:
"We were in his home talking about the possibility of him appearing on the television series, Talk About Pictures. I told Carew that I thought he was almost as good a baseball player as he was a photographer. He smiled, but said nothing.
'From what I see of your photographs around the house,' I said, 'you seem to almost specialize in photographing children. Why?' I asked.
Carew stared at the floor for several seconds. 'I like them,' he finally answered. 'Kids seem happier today than they were when I was a kid.'"
