DescriptionFigural polychrome vessel from Tonosi area, probably early Conte period, Panama. On the coastal plain of the Bay of Parita is located the necropolis of Conte. Conte pottery is decorated with motifs in black, white, red, purple, and grey. With time the design of these pieces became more complicated and the animal and human forms were stylized and merged with geometric motifs. Outlining the motifs in black became standardized during this period. Figural vessels have been found in elite burials in large quantities indicating the luxury of such pottery. On View
